BANGKOK, Aug. 17 (UPI) — Ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is not expected to return to Thailand any time soon to face corruption charges, despite an arrest warrant.
The Bangkok Post reported Friday Thaksin, who now lives in England, has been ordered to appear next week in a Thai court to face his first hearing on the charges involving land purchase. The newspaper quoted his attorney, Noppadon Pattama, as saying that his client will not return to Thailand.
An arrest warrant has been issued against Thaksin, who is accused of abusing his authority as prime minister, allegedly allowing his wife to buy land at below-market price, the report said.
His lawyer said there is no assurance Thaksin will be safe if he returns and claimed he could not get a fair trial. He said the Thai government will be in a position to influence witnesses against Thaksin and his family.
Thaksin is preparing documents to oppose any Thai effort to have him extra
