ABC Radio Australia

The United States is demanding an end to martial law in Thailand within the next week and a half.

A
spokesman for the US Embassy in Bangkok says the US also wants new
elections to be held as soon as possible, instead of in October of next
year, as planned by the National Security Council.

The Council,
comprised of generals involved in the September 19 coup that removed
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, says no decision will be made until
a new cabinet is in place.

Surayud Chulanont, the former army
chief the coup leaders have installed as prime minister, says he
expects to have chosen his cabinet by next week.

Last week, the US withdrew $US24 million dollars in military aid to Thailand in response to the coup.

Our South East Asia correspondent, Karen Percy, says more sanctions are possible.

Since
the coup, freedom of speech has been curtailed, political activity
banned, and gatherings of more than 5 people prohibited.
